Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0

Mozilla is a company that is great at making free, yet high quality, software. Though it is most famous for Firefox, the company has many other projects, which also boast a high userbase. A great example of these projects is Thunderbird, which has just hit version 3.0 earlier today.

The release notes, found here, list the changes to date. Some of these include:

  • New Search with Advanced Filtering Tools
Search results now include advanced filtering tools. You have the option to filter your results by sender, tag, attachments, people, folder, and mailing list. You can also filter your email using the timeline tool.
  • New Global Search Field with Autocomplete
When typing in the Global Search field, Thunderbird autocompletes against your address book. You have the option of searching everywhere or filtering against different parts of the email such as by subject or by sender.
  • Tabbed Email Messages
Double-clicking or hitting enter on a mail message will now open that message in a New Tab window. Middle-clicking on messages or folders will open them in a Tab in the background. When quitting Thunderbird, visible tabs will be saved and will be restored when you open Thunderbird the next time. There is also a new Tab menu on the Tab toolbar to help you switch between Tabs.
  • New Add-ons Manager
The new Add-ons Manager (Tools > Add-ons) can now be used to find, download, and install Thunderbird Add-ons which includes Extensions, Themes, and Plugins. Note that few Add-ons are compatible with this beta at the time of release, as Add-on developers need to upgrade them.
  • IMAP Folder Synchronization
Thunderbird will download IMAP messages by default in the background to allow for faster message loading and better offline operation. This feature can be enabled on an individual folder basis via Folder properties, or for all folders in an account via Account Settings / ‘Synchronize & Storage’.

Of course, this is only a brief selection of some of the changes made to this new version of Thunderbird. Lifehacker has noted some more of the changes, showing off the search filtering, and said that Thunderbird 3.0 identifies people who participated in emails, by using your search terms, and promptly shows them all under a ‘People’ sidebar at the side, so you know who was involved. If you’d like to install version 3.0 of Thunderbird, please use the download links from this page, which we have included below (in U.S. English).

Firefox 3 Testing Begins

The next version of Mozilla Firefox, codenamed Gran Paradiso, but better known as Firefox 3 is now entering the final phase of testing with the release of the Beta 1 software It’s still a bit early for everyday use but developers and geeks are welcome to give it a test run, and help Mozilla iron out any remaining bugs. It has lots of interesting new features, including Information about the site you are visiting just click on the site’s ‘Favicon’ (the little icon that appears on the address bar, it has beefed up malware protection, better all round security, integration with anti-virus software (it alerts your AV program if it detects anything suspicious in a download), and there’s a ‘resume’ download feature if your connection is interrupted for any reason. Password management has been simplified, the useful Find toolbar now opens automatically and early reports suggest that it is faster and more stable than its predecessors and barring any last minute disasters the finished version is on course for release early next year.

Microsoft Just a Spectator at Mozilla’s Firefox Spectacle

Microsoft is nothing more than a simple spectator at Mozilla’s Firefox spectacle of releases. A new version of the open source browser is now available for download. Mozilla has delivered Firefox 2.0.0.10, a stability update announced as early as last week. Firefox 2.0.0.10 can be grabbed immediately via this link, but Mozilla will also serve the refresh via its update infrastructure, and in this sense, users will be alerted of the new build. With this release, Mozilla has plugged three security holes in the browser. A referer-spoofing via window.location race condition flaw, jar: URI scheme XSS hazard, and holes involving memory corruption are the vulnerabilities fixed with Firefox 2.0.0.10.

“As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 2.0.0.10 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download. (more…)

Firefox Security Flaw Affecting Gmail’s Users

Last week, security companies around the world spotted a new vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox which could allow the attackers to use a malicious JAR file to harm users’ computers. The security flaw is still there and moreover, it seems it affects most websites on the Internet including the super search giant Google. GnuCitizien wrote that Michal Zalewski from Google (you know, that famous hacker who joined Googleplex) required additional information about a potential exploitation over the company’s technologies. In addition, beford.org discovered a way to steal the Gmail contact list using a malicious JAR file especially created to take advantage of the Firefox vulnerability. (more…)

The New Firefox 2.0.0.9 Plays Well with Windows Vista

A new version of Firefox is available for download. On October 19, Mozilla made available an update to its open source browser, taking the version build from 2.0.0.7 to 2.0.0.8. The version numbers are not a clear indication of the evolution between the two Firefox variants. According to Mozilla, over 200 issues impacting the Firefox browser were addressed by the 2.0.0.8 update. However, at the same time, the extent of the modifications introduced by Firefox 2.0.0.8 also affected the functionality of the browser regressing a handful of aspects.

On October 22, Mozilla promised to update the Firefox 2.0.0.8 update in order to take care of the problems generated by the refresh. You will be able to find a complete list with the issues fixed at the bottom of this article. “As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 2.0.0.9 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download.
