Flugtag recap: The Phoenix has “flown”!

Red Bull Flugtag was on Saturday, and I’m proud to say that the Phoenix flew 62 feet!  45 of those feet were straight down, but who’s counting?  Have a look at the video (the photographer got our name wrong, but that’s ok)…and pay attention to the mind-blowing dancing.  I’m the one in yellow:

The actual flight wasn’t a huge success, but the event was.  People were cheering their hearts out for us and for Microsoft, and I know I speak for everyone on the team when I say that it was really cool to be part of something so totally off-the-wall crazy.  I think my favorite part of the flight was the reaction from the crowd when we played our launch music, which we laced with system sounds from Windows 7 and Windows XP.  When the Windows XP startup music played, the crowd immediately got into the groove.  Everyone knows that iconic noise and it instantly made the Flugtag/Microsoft connection for the 105,000 people who were watching.

The Windows Project Phoenix Team celebrating the completed craft & tower

We’re all safe and sound and in one piece (I smashed into the wing on the way into the water and banged up my mouth, but nothing major), and happy to be back in Redmond with our friends, families and co-workers.

Below are a few more of my favorite photos from launch day and we’ll be posting many more stills and video clips on our Facebook page over the next few days.  Thanks again to everyone who supported us – we really couldn’t have done it without you.  And be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page for information on our next crazy adventure.  I’m pretty sure that Project Phoenix will rise again!

Dancing

Three words: Mad. Dance. Skills.

Our engineers, Mike, Lucas and Brian, worked their hearts out (and butts off) on this project.

Remotely Disable Control Panel Access

Post image for Remotely Disable Control Panel Access

I got a question from Mark last week:

“Steve, I was wondering if you could add a plugin to Network Administrator that would disable control panel access. I know it is not the best way to keep people out, but it would save me a lot of headaches”

Actually, I have gotten a few requests for this. Disabling control panel access is actually quite easy. If you drill down to this registry key:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You just need to add a DWORD value of NoControlPanel, and set it to 1:

Registry View

Windows 7 handles this smoothly. See my start menu before the change:

Windows 7 Before Change

After the change, the control panel option is missing:

Windows 7 Before Change

XP is not as nice, it keeps the icon…but you get a nasty message when clicking on it:

Windows XP No Control Panel

We added a plugin to Network Administrator. That way you can easily make the change without plunking around in the registry, plus you can push it remotely against machines on your network:

Network Administrator Disable Control Panel Plugin

You can get your free download from here:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/NetworkAdministratorTrial.exe

Disabling the control panel won’t keep everyone out, but in some situations it can really help.

Windows XP Operating System Support

Expert technicians at iYogi Technical Services have the resources and experience to solve the most complex issues related to Windows XP support.
To take a quick step backwards, everyone remembers that when Windows XP was launched, there were a lot of people who stressed that there was no need for a new Windows operating system from Microsoft and they were contended using old DOS-based versions, such as Windows 95, 98, and 98SE. No doubt this was for sure, but technically it was not appropriate. Windows XP as compared to the other Windows operating systems provided dramatic advances in power and reliability.
There are some glitches in Windows XP production since it was incompatible with many old programs and peripherals, it had to get new drivers, and the interface needed some relearning.
Keeping all these factors in mind, iYogi Technical Services started its premium Windows XP Support for small business and home users worldwide.

Get to the recycle bin – even when it is hidden

Now this is a cool little time saver tip. Unfortunately this only works in XP, and 2000.

Lets say you got lots of windows open, and you have a file or folder you want to quickly get to the recycle bin

Screen full of windows

Just drag your file or folder to an empty spot on the task bar (Don’t let go!)

Task Bar Recycle

And bam! All your windows will minimize

Empty Screen

Now you can easily reach the recycle bin only using your mouse.
